School ≠ Education

If I were to ask, "Where did you get your education?" most people would reply by listing off their college or school alma maters.

A 60 year old woman would respond with a degree she got 40 years before.

A 15 year old teenager would respond that he hasn't yet received a degree.

Today it hit me how sad that is.

Why do we see education as a goal to be reached, as a tangible degree, as something you should achieve early in life, as something to "get"?

I'm the first to admit that the word "education" holds an institutional meaning for me.

And yet, education is a lifelong endeavor.

It is the challenge of every human being.

It is our most joyous and rewarding pursuit.

Education is the culmination of our life experiences: our relationships, travels, and discussions.

What times in your life have educated you the most? Do you find yourself learning more now than you ever did in school?

I hope I never forget how fluid my education is, how vital it is to living.
