Expectations = Suffering

Emotions influence creativity.

When we are anxious and stressed, it feels impossible to put our best effort into a project. When we are on a high, inspiration seems to flow with no end in sight.

Problems come when we expect and wait for inspiration before working.

Buddhism teaches that suffering comes from expectations. Isn't that true though? When we expect to do well on a test and don't, we suffer. When we expect our kids to follow our examples and they don't, we suffer. When we expect the flow of inspiration to be the standard, not the exception, we suffer.

Seth Godin makes a really good point in his book, What To Do When It's Your Turn:

The sailor doesn't mind a rough sea.

It's not because he's physically different from you

- it's because the rocking of the boat is expected.

We naturally find our own horizon when the external one is rocking.

What expectations do you have that cause yourself suffering? How will your life improve if you expect the ups and downs of being a human being? How will your projects improve because you accept the default in your expectations?
